This is Shareware ! ! ! ! Give it to your friends, place it on CD-ROM's,
and place it on your website.
This version allows encode/decode of 5 seconds of audio content.
A copy of MPEG/CD which allows unlimited decode/play can be obtained
by sending a check for $25 to:
Kauai Media
3790 Via de la Valle
Suite 204
Del Mar, CA 92014
You can order the complete MPEG/CDE encoder/player which looks exactly
like MPEG/CD but allows unlimited audio encoding times. To obtain MPEG/CDE
send your $195 check to the same address.
Kauai Media develops MPEG-1 audio WWW authoring products. Our current
product line includes:
・ MPEG/CD - realtime MPEG audio decoder ($25)
・ MPEG/CDE - realtime MPEG audio encoder/decoder ($195)
・ MPEG/CDS - realtime streaming MPEG audio decoder client
MPEG/CDェ is a realtime MPEG-1 audio decoder/player (i.e., Netscape viewer)
for Macintosh and PowerMac computers which produces the best possible
MPEG-1 audio from your existing Macintosh hardware.
The MPEG standard provides for a variety of encoding bitrates supporting
a full range of communication link speeds, from modem, through ISDN, to
T1, T3, cable modem and beyond.
Both MPEG/CD and MPEG/CDE support Kauai Media's Low Bit Rate (LBR) modes
of operation (a superset of MPEG) which allows Point-and-Click streaming
Audio-On-Demand from 14,400 and 28,800 baud modems with the MPEG/CDS
streaming client. MPEG/CD and MPEG/CDE both encode and play the streaming
LBR rates in a standard Netscape Helper Application fashion, i.e. the user
clicks a hyperlink, the file downloads to the host machine and is then played.
The MPEG/CDS client allows MPEG encoded data to be played in a Point-and-Click
streaming fashion from within Netscape without file download. Any MPEG-1
audio bitrate can be streamed, though two factors determine the ultimate
audio quality to the user: 1) CPU performance, (all PowerPC's have
no problem), and 2) Communication link speed. Content providers placing MPEG
audio on their site have complete flexibilty in MPEG bitrates to support
the increasing range of communication link speeds to the Internet population.
Here's the scenario a webmaster uses to place MPEG audio on their site:
・ Play with this ShareWare version - encode, play, and place some
short clips on your site to get a feel for the process. Encode a
single audio clip in various MPEG bitrates/layers to assess fidelity
versus filesize tradeoffs. (Be certain to set your http server Mime types
setup file to accomodate .mp2 and .m1a filetypes).
・ License MPEG/CDE then encode and play unlimited length audio clips.
This is critical prior to setting up your site, as it allows you to
further evaluate which MPEG bitrates, comm. link speeds, etc. you
wish to cater to.
・ License MPEG/CD and/or the MPEG/CDS streaming clients for your site.
Kauai licenses either app. with unlimited download capability from
your site on a time release basis in three month increments. This assures
you a fixed operating cost to serve audio from your site - regardless
of the number of site visits. Licensing includes further software
upgrades as they become available.
What's New:
・ Ability to convert audio CD track to AIFF file.
・ Ability to record from Microphone to AIFF file.
・ Cleaner preferences setup.
・ Ability to MPEG encode 10 seconds of AIFF audio data.
・ New MPEG-LBR low bitrate mode compression.
・ Uses new industry standard ".m1a" filetype (MPEG-1 audio).
MPEG/CDェ requires:
・ System 7 or later
・ 68020 or 68030 with 68881/68882 floating point coprocessor, or,
・ 68040 processor with internal FPU (excludes LC040 based Centris, etc) , or,
・ Power Macintosh with internal FPU (runs native).
・ Sound Manager 3.1 (for most 68K based machines).
・ 2MB internal RAM minimum..
・ Optional Internet connection to access MPEG encoded audio files
via ftp or World Wide Web.
MPEG/CDェ runs on:

Installation
1) Purge previous MPEG/CDェ (and derivative) releases
Remove any old MPEG/CDェ, MPEG/CDEェ, etc. distributions from your system
to avoid any conflicts. This includes the MPEGDefaultconfig and
MPEGDefaultPlayList in your System Folder Preferences area.
2) MPEG/CD ェ
Place the distribution MPEG/CDェ folder on your hard drive. Keep the folder
intact and make an alias for the MPEG/CDェ application. Place the alias on
your desktop for easy access to drag-and-drop audio file play (see below).
To create an MPEG/CDェ alias select the MPEG/CDェ application by clicking
it once in the Finder and, from within the Finder, select "File/Make Alias".
3) Sound Manager 3.1
All 68K based Macs (excluding Centris 660AV and Quadra 840AV)
require the Sound Manager 3.0 extension or greater. You can find a copy at
http://wwwhost.ots.utexas.edu/mac/pub-mac-system.html#sound-manager-31
Following download, open the Sound Manager Folder and check the README file
for installation instructions. Remember to restart your machine following
installation.
4) System Extensions and MPEG
Realtime MPEG audio decompression requires sufficient CPU processing power.
System Extensions silently rob processing power to the point where
realtime MPEG audio decompression may not be viable - regardless of the
strength of your CPU. Thus we recommend to keep your System Folder/Extensions
to a bare minimum to avoid unnecessary overhead to your machine.
If gaps exist in realtime PowerPC playback, chances are you've
too many System Extensions. System 7.5.2 provides an Extension Manager
allowing you to easily enable/disable loading of extensions. System
7.5.1 and below require you to physically remove the extensions from your
Systems Folder/Extensions area.
Most complaints regarding the inability to cleanly play MPEG audio are due
to excessive system extensions. Verify you're running the minimum set
of extensions on your machine - other applications will also be happier :-).
A Quick Test
An MPEG encoded audio file is included in the distribution called
"Astor_Basia.mp2". Drag this file over the MPEG/CDェ application (or alias)
icon and release. MPEG/CDェ will launch, and, if your machine meets
the above listed requirements, the sound file begins realtime
decompression and play through your Mac or PowerMac.
If there's a repeated sequence of music followed by a gap, your machine
may not have the "right stuff" to decompress the audio full quality in
realtime. Read the MANUAL for a full description of how to allow realtime
play on your machine through 1) downsampling, 2) removing system
extensions from your system folder, or 3) non-realtime AIFF file decompression.
A special thanks to the Del Mar, California based group "Blurring the Edges"
and their Astor_Basia sound sample.
Configuring MPEG/CDェ as a Netscape Helper Application
1. Click on Preferences under the Options menu in Netscape.
2. Select Helper Applications from the menu in the Preferences window.
3. Click on the New... button.
4. Enter audio for the Mime type and x-mpeg for the Mime subtype.
5. Enter mp2, m1a, and map in the Extensions box.
6. Select MPEG/CD for the Application by Browsing
7. Choose M1A as the File type.
8. Click on Launch application for the Action.
9. Click on Preferences under the Applications and Directories menu.
10. Under Directories, Browse for the folder to store your MPEG audio files.
This will be the MPEG audio file storage area when you click on mp2 or m1a
hyperlinks in Netscape. Normally this is set to the desktop area.
Kauai Media OEM Licensing
Kauai Media also licenses MPEG/CDェ to third party developers for inclusion
in multimedia products including audio CD, CD-ROM, interactive CD,
Enhanced CD, game cartridge, or other. MPEG encoded audio significantly
improves any World Wide Web site or individual home page whether used
for narration, background music, or sound effects.
A word to Non-FPU users
Realtime MPEG decompression requires sufficient computing strength
and the decision was made early to support machines with the ability to
produce reasonable audio within a reasonable amount of time. Users would
become disenchanted with MPEG (and justifiably so!) if they had to wait
hours for a tune to decompress only to listen to it in sub u-law quality.
Thus, there is currently no intention to support non-FPU based Macs.
Best Wishes on your audio Web Site ...
